Spectrum of COVID-19: A Disorder of Multisystem Beyond Respiratory Disease

Abstract

We are in the nascent stages of our understanding of how SARS-CoV-2 infects humans and causes COVID-19. In addition to the lungs, SARSCoV-2 also attacks many other organs of multiple systems. Patients contracted with COVID-19, from infants to adults, may present with or without typical respiratory symptoms but symptoms of other systems including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, urologic, hematologic, immunologic, dermatologic and central and peripheral nervous systems. Some patients may die unexpectedly. Despite limitations in our capacity to determine the mechanism underpinning COVID-19-driven pathology in the clinic, we summarize COVID-19 clinical manifestations and explore possible mechanisms underlying COVID-19 disease, including unexpected mortality.
